Aston Martin DB4 Parts Guide

The Aston Martin DB4 was produced between 1958 and 1963 and represented a major step forward for Aston Martin. Designed by Touring of Milan and powered by Tadek Marek's all-new 3.7-litre straight-six engine, the DB4 became one of the marque's most important grand tourers.

Today the DB4 remains one of the most desirable classic Aston Martins, with numerous variations including the Series 1-5 cars, the high-performance Vantage and the legendary DB4 GT. Aston Engineering supplies genuine, OEM and specialist DB4 parts for owners, restorers and workshops worldwide.

DB4 Production Overview

Model Years
DB4 Series 1 1958-1959
DB4 Series 2 1959-1960
DB4 Series 3 1960-1961
DB4 Series 4 1961-1962
DB4 Series 5 1962-1963
DB4 Vantage 1961-1963
DB4 GT 1959-1963

The DB4 evolved continuously throughout production, with five distinct series being produced before development led directly into the DB5. The Vantage and GT models introduced significant performance improvements and remain highly sought after today.

Aston Martin DB4 Series 1 (1958-1959)

The Series 1 was the original DB4 introduced in 1958. These early cars are easily recognised by their distinctive grille design and lack of window frames.

Many Series 1 components are unique to these early production cars, making accurate parts identification particularly important when ordering restoration parts.

Aston Martin DB4 Series 2 (1959-1960)

Series 2 cars introduced a number of refinements, most notably the addition of window frames. Although visually similar to the Series 1, several body, trim and mechanical details differ.

When ordering parts it is important to identify the correct series to ensure compatibility.

Aston Martin DB4 Series 3 (1960-1961)

The Series 3 brought further development and improved rear lighting arrangements. Many enthusiasts consider the Series 3 to offer an excellent balance between the early DB4 styling and later engineering improvements.

Aston Martin DB4 Series 4 (1961-1962)

Series 4 cars introduced a revised front grille design and continued Aston Martin's programme of refinement.

This series also coincided with the introduction of the DB4 Vantage specification.

Aston Martin DB4 Series 5 (1962-1963)

The final evolution of the DB4 featured a slightly taller and longer body providing improved interior space.

The styling moved closer to what would later become the Aston Martin DB5, making the Series 5 an important transitional model.

Aston Martin DB4 Vantage

Introduced during Series 4 production, the Vantage offered increased performance through the use of triple SU carburettors and revised cylinder head specifications.

Many Vantage models also featured the distinctive enclosed headlamp treatment associated with the DB4 GT.

A total of 136 saloons and 32 convertibles were built with the Vantage engine specification.

Aston Martin DB4 GT

The DB4 GT was the ultimate performance version of the DB4.

Introduced in 1959, it featured:

  • Lightweight body construction
  • Shortened wheelbase
  • Twin-plug cylinder head
  • Triple Weber carburettors
  • Approximately 302 bhp

The DB4 GT was one of the fastest road cars in the world during its era and formed the basis for the famous DB4 GT Zagato. Just 75 DB4 GTs were produced.
